Maximus the seal has developed a knack for mischief, regularly targeting a boat tour company as his daily quarry. Each evening, Maximus commandeers his preferred yellow dinghy, remaining aboard until he’s had his fill of sun or is gently coaxed off with a hose.

Pembrokeshire Islands Boat Trips, based in south-west Wales, has grown accustomed to their persistent visitor. “He’s become quite a fixture here,” said Gareth Reynolds from the company. “Maximus is so familiar with us now that this has become a daily routine.”

For over ten years, Maximus has been a regular sight around the company’s base in Neyland, Pembrokeshire. “Everyone looks forward to the hose-down at the end of the day,” Gareth added. “He loves our yellow dinghy and alternates with another orange rib.”

Maximus provides ample entertainment for passengers starting their trips, often remaining motionless and unbothered by nearby onlookers. “He’s great for videos, though it can be a bit exasperating when you’re ready to go home and he won’t budge,” said Gareth.

Maximus has even started enjoying the cooling showers meant to deter him, rendering the tactic less effective. “He used to scamper off with a spray, but now he sees it as his daily shower,” Gareth explained. “It’s become a game to see how long it takes for him to get enough – you have to aim for his head.”

The company offers boat tours along the Pembrokeshire coast, including trips to the puffin-populated Skomer Island. Yet, as summer wanes and puffins become scarce, Maximus often steals the spotlight. “The puffins are a major draw, but they disappear around this time of year,” said Gareth. “We’re grateful for Maximus… we truly love him; he’s part of our team.”
