An unforgettable wildlife rescue unfolded off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa, when a marine biologist and kayak adventure guide was unexpectedly chosen by an injured African penguin.
A Strange Encounter on the Water
Kirshia Govender, a marine biologist and experienced kayak guide, was leading a tour when she noticed something unusual. A lone African penguin swam directly toward her kayak and began circling it.
The bird was also vocal — behavior that immediately raised concern.
“I realized something was wrong because it was circling and being vocal. That’s very unusual behavior for a penguin,” Govender explained.
The Penguin Does the Unthinkable
Curious and worried, Govender gently paddled closer. Normally, wild birds flee from humans. But this penguin did the exact opposite.
Instead of swimming away, the penguin jumped onto her kayak.
“The next thing I knew, it just hopped up onto my kayak,” Govender said.
At first shocked, Govender quickly realized the penguin was injured. The bird had a visible wound on its chest, likely caused by a bite from another animal.
A Half-Hour Journey Back to Safety
Govender carefully paddled back to shore with the penguin resting on her kayak. The journey took about 30 minutes, during which the penguin showed remarkable trust and affection.
The bird made gentle braying sounds, tried to preen her, and even wrapped its wings around her.
“The best was the hugs,” Govender said. “The hugs from an African penguin were very special.”
Immediate Care From Wildlife Experts
Once on land, Govender contacted the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB). The organization quickly agreed to take the penguin in for treatment and rehabilitation.
The bird is now in professional care and will remain at the facility until it is healthy enough to return to the wild.
A Critically Endangered Species
African penguins are facing a severe population decline.
There are fewer than 8,000 breeding pairs left, making every rescue vital for the survival of the species.
Govender was grateful to play a role in protecting one of these rare and vulnerable animals.

The moment left a deep emotional impact on Govender.
“It’s something I’ll always remember because this animal chose to trust me,” she said. “It’s an experience I’ll treasure for life.”
