In a heartwarming gesture just before Thanksgiving, retired military dog Yyacob was joyfully reunited with his former handler, US Army Staff Sergeant (Ssg) Payton May, in San Antonio, Texas. The 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, who served as an explosives detection and patrol dog, spent nearly seven years protecting service members, civilians, and even US presidents.
Yyacob and Ssg. May forged their bond during a nine-month deployment in Iraq. Their reunion, facilitated by American Humane, marked the first time they had seen each other in years. “We’re honored to give this brave canine the retirement he deserves after his years of distinguished service,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane.
A Distinguished Service Career:
As a team, May and Yyacob completed the elite Patrol Explosive Detection Dog—Enhanced Course, an advanced 60-day program training police patrol and explosive detection dogs to work off-leash at significant distances. This prestigious course was held only three times a year for select teams. Initially, May found Yyacob’s energy overwhelming, describing his first impression as, “This dog is nuts.” Yet, their partnership grew into an unbreakable bond.
During their time in Iraq, the duo was inseparable, sharing everything from work duties to a twin-sized bed, where Yyacob, May affectionately recalls, would cuddle and hog the space. “He’s a big baby,” May said.
The Journey to Reunification:
In 2020, the pair was separated when Yyacob was reassigned to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas. When May discovered his former partner was retiring, he immediately contacted American Humane, inspired by the organization’s prior work reuniting military dogs with their handlers. American Humane facilitated the reunion, covering all transportation expenses and committing to free lifelong veterinary care for Yyacob.
A New Chapter Ahead:
Looking forward, Yyacob will accompany May on his upcoming deployment to Italy, enjoying a well-earned retirement alongside his best friend. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to bring Yyacob home,” said Ganzert, reflecting on the organization’s dedication to honoring and caring for military animals.
This reunion is a touching reminder of the sacrifices and bonds shared by military personnel and their canine partners, ensuring Yyacob’s legacy of service is met with the comfort and care he deserves in his golden years.
