Since her rescue, Barnacle Bill has grown significantly, from just over 700g (24.7oz) to 3.1kgs (109.3oz), which has required increasingly larger enclosures.

During this time, the GSPCA has made several attempts to rehome her in warmer climates, but these efforts have yet to succeed.

As a loggerhead turtle, classified as vulnerable by the World Wildlife Fund, Bill needs special documentation for international travel.

The charity previously rehomed turtles in Gran Canaria, but complications with import paperwork made that option unavailable.

The shelter continues to explore potential destinations, including Cape Verde, Turkey, and more recently Morocco, the Azores, and Bermuda.

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne expressed frustration over the lengthy process of obtaining the necessary paperwork and finding a suitable destination, saying, “Until we secure the proper permissions and a destination, all we can do is ensure she receives the best care possible.”
