This past May, a Good Samaritan in Buffalo, New York, noticed an abandoned cardboard box baking in the sunlight. Approaching the box, the passerby saw the word โkittensโ scrawled on the side.
Sure enough, the Good Samaritan opened the cardboard flaps and found four scared kittens huddled underneath. In need of help, the concerned animal lover called West Side Cat Rescue founder Jamie Mulligan for backup. Eventually, Mulligan figured out where the kittens came from. Homeowners nearby had an unspayed female cat whoโd just given birth to her third litter. Unable to find homes for all the kittens, the catโs parents had chosen to leave the remaining babies on the side of the road.
Disappointed but not necessarily surprised, Mulligan took the babies and the mother kitten back to the rescue, where they could receive the appropriate care they needed.
โThe rescueโs biggest frustration is people giving away unspayed or unneutered kittens, perpetuating the cycle of overpopulation,โ Mulligan said. Safe with West Side Cat Rescue, the little family could finally relax. The babies ate and drank, and their mom received necessary veterinary care.
โPatience, the mom, will be spayed tomorrow,โ West Side Cat Rescue wrote in a Facebook post at the time. โNever again will she have another litter.โ Out of a hot cardboard box and into loving homes, these kittens and their mother wonโt have to worry about fending for themselves any longer.
โThe kittens are now doing well in foster care,โ a representative from West Side Cat Rescue confirmed. โ[Theyโre] being placed for adoption soon.โ
