What began as an ordinary road trip across South Africa turned into an unforgettable rescue when two friends spotted something heartbreaking along the side of a busy highway.
An elderly golden retriever was wandering alone near Knysna, looking exhausted, neglected, and desperately in need of help.
Most drivers continued on their way, but Joshua Rubin and his friend Daniel couldn’t bring themselves to ignore her.
The moment they noticed the struggling dog, they knew they had to stop.
“Seeing a golden retriever in that condition, wandering along the side of a highway, was also something you don’t come across very often in South Africa,” Rubin told The Dodo.
Neither man could have imagined that this unexpected encounter would change their lives forever.

As Rubin and Daniel stepped out of their vehicle, they weren’t sure how the frightened dog would react.
But instead of running away or hiding, the golden retriever did something that touched their hearts.
She hurried straight toward them.
“[S]he came running straight towards us,” Rubin recalled.
It was almost as though she had been waiting for someone to finally notice her.
The two friends immediately realized that leaving such an elderly dog beside the highway simply wasn’t an option.
They were in the middle of an ambitious road trip across South Africa, with plenty of miles still ahead of them. Taking responsibility for a stray dog wasn’t part of their plans.
But sometimes, the most meaningful moments in life are the ones nobody plans.
Without hesitation, they welcomed the gentle golden retriever into their vehicle.
And just like that, their adventure gained an unexpected new companion.

“[W]hen [the dog] came along, she became the third member of our little team,” Rubin shared. “And the amazing thing was how naturally she fitted in with us.”
Although she quickly became comfortable around her rescuers, it was clear that the senior dog needed much more than a ride away from the highway.
Her beautiful golden coat was severely matted, and her body was covered in ticks.
She had clearly been through a difficult time.
Rubin and Daniel made sure she received a much-needed bath, gently cleaning her fur and helping her feel more comfortable.
They also took her to a veterinarian for a thorough examination, hoping to learn more about her condition and whether someone might be searching for her.
That’s when they discovered an important clue.
The dog had a microchip.
And the information it revealed helped piece together her heartbreaking story.
Her name was Mia.
She was 11 years old.
And she had been missing for seven weeks.

But Mia’s story was even sadder than her rescuers had initially imagined.
Her previous owner had passed away, leaving the elderly dog without the person who had once been her whole world.
Following his death, his family had been trying their best to care for Mia.
Now, after weeks of being missing, she had finally been found.
Rubin and Daniel were relieved to understand where she had come from, but the discovery also raised an important question.
What would happen to Mia next?
At 11 years old, she had already endured significant upheaval. After losing her owner and spending seven weeks away from home, another major change could be difficult for her.
Rubin spoke with her late owner’s family, and together they considered what would be best for the gentle senior dog.
“It was obviously a difficult and emotional decision for them, but after talking everything through, we all agreed that the best thing for Mia would be to stay with us rather than have to move and adjust to another home again,” Rubin explained.
For Rubin, the decision was simple.
He had already fallen in love with Mia.
And once it became clear that he could give her a permanent home, he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
He adopted her.

During her veterinary examinations, doctors discovered that Mia had several cancerous masses.
The news was frightening for Rubin, who had only just found his new companion and already couldn’t imagine leaving her behind.
After everything Mia had endured, he wanted to give her every possible chance at a comfortable and happy future.
With her new dad supporting her, Mia underwent the surgery she needed.

Throughout their time together, Rubin continued discovering just how special Mia truly was.
Despite her difficult experiences, she remained incredibly affectionate and trusting.
She seemed to have an endless amount of love to give, whether she was spending time with her rescuers or meeting someone new.
“Mia is honestly one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met,” Rubin said. “She’s incredibly gentle, affectionate and loving, and she’s especially wonderful with children.”
Her warm personality only made Rubin more certain that rescuing her had been the right decision.
When their cross-country road trip finally came to an end, Mia’s adventure wasn’t over.
For the first time in weeks, she was heading somewhere she could truly call home.
Rubin brought her back to his family, where she was introduced to his other rescue dogs.
And just as she had settled so naturally into the road trip, Mia quickly found her place in the household.
She got along beautifully with the other animals and soon won over everyone in the family.

After weeks of uncertainty, Mia now has the comfort of a loving home, familiar faces, and people determined to make her senior years as wonderful as possible.
For Rubin, the transformation has been extraordinary.
What started as a chance encounter on a highway has grown into a bond he never expected.
“She’s settled in beautifully, and everyone absolutely adores her,” he shared. “It’s amazing how quickly she’s become such a special part of our lives.”
Mia may never understand exactly how close she came to being overlooked that day on the highway.
She only knows that two kind strangers stopped, opened their car door, and gave her the chance to start again.
And in return, she has filled their lives with an unexpected kind of happiness.
