A severely overweight bulldog who once struggled to take even a few steps has undergone an incredible transformation β€” and her story has a heartwarming ending.

Meet Peggy Sue, an adorable bulldog whose weight had climbed to approximately 70 pounds (32 kilograms), making her almost as heavy as a newborn hippopotamus.

When Peggy Sue arrived at the RSPCA’s West Hatch Animal Centre in Somerset, England, her condition was deeply concerning.

Her excessive weight had made everyday activities incredibly difficult. She suffered from infections, struggled to regulate her body temperature and became exhausted after walking only a short distance.

Sometimes, she could barely move without collapsing.

The situation was so serious that when Peggy Sue arrived at the rescue center in July, staff had to transport her from the vehicle to her kennel in a crate because she was unable to walk the distance herself.

Watching the sweet bulldog struggle with even the simplest movements was heartbreaking for the rescue team.

Anita Clark, deputy manager at the RSPCA center, explained that Peggy Sue desperately needed specialized care, patience and attention to help her regain her mobility and improve her health.

Fortunately, her rescuers were determined to give her the second chance she deserved.

With the assistance of a devoted foster caregiver, Peggy Sue began a carefully managed weight-loss journey.

Her daily activity was increased gradually, allowing her to build strength without putting too much pressure on her body.

Alongside her gentle exercise routine, she followed a controlled diet designed to help her lose weight safely.

Progress didn’t happen overnight, but every small improvement was a reason to celebrate.

As the weeks passed, Peggy Sue slowly became more comfortable moving around. Activities that once seemed impossible gradually became part of her daily routine.

And her hard work eventually paid off.

Peggy Sue’s weight dropped to a much healthier 23.5 kilograms, or approximately 52 pounds β€” an impressive loss of nearly 20 pounds.

But her physical transformation wasn’t the only wonderful change waiting for her.

During the RSPCA’s annual Adoptober campaign, Peggy Sue finally found the loving family she had been waiting for.

Her new owners, Emmie and Andy, welcomed her into their home in Taunton, England, where she quickly began enjoying a completely different lifestyle.

The once-struggling bulldog discovered a love for outdoor adventures, especially exploring streams and splashing around in rock pools.

She also gained a new canine companion β€” a Jack Russell mix whose longtime friend, a 16-year-old dog named Mr Woo, had recently passed away.

Peggy Sue’s arrival brought a new friendship into the household.

For Emmie and Andy, opening their home to a rescue animal was nothing new. Peggy Sue became their sixth rescue dog, continuing a tradition that has brought them enormous happiness.

Emmie praised the RSPCA and Peggy Sue’s foster caregiver for helping her lose the first 5 kilograms, roughly 11 pounds, before her adoption.

The couple were determined to continue that progress by maintaining her healthy diet and encouraging regular activity.

When Peggy Sue first joined their family, she could only manage short bursts of energy. But with consistent care and encouragement, her stamina steadily improved.

Today, she enjoys going for walks, taking car rides and exploring the world around her β€” experiences that would have been incredibly difficult when she first entered the shelter.

Her transformation is about much more than the number on a scale.

It’s a story of patience, dedication and the remarkable difference that compassionate care can make in an animal’s life.

Once barely able to walk, Peggy Sue now has the freedom to enjoy adventures with a family who adores her.

Her new owners hope her journey will inspire others to consider giving shelter animals a second chance.

After everything she’s overcome, this lovable bulldog is finally living the happy, active life she deserves.
