β€œShe knew her sad face would get us …”

When Hiền and her husband arrived at a cozy Airbnb tucked away in the mountains of Port Angeles, Washington, they were looking forward to a peaceful weekend surrounded by beautiful scenery. They expected a comfortable place to rest between adventures, but they had no idea that their stay would come with an especially affectionate four-legged companion.

As soon as the couple pulled up to the property, a yellow Labrador retriever came bounding toward them, her tail wagging with excitement. The dog, whose name was Pearl, greeted them as if they were old friends she had been waiting all day to see.

At first, the couple couldn’t quite understand why the friendly pup seemed so eager to welcome them. Then they discovered an explanation in the guest booklet inside the Airbnb.

β€œβ€˜Don’t be surprised if a Lab is too friendly with you,’” the booklet read, Hiền told The Dodo. β€œβ€˜She’s the host’s dog who loves visitors.’”

It didn’t take long for Hiền to understand exactly what the host meant. Pearl seemed determined to make the couple feel at home, and she wasted no time inviting her new friends to play.

β€œPearl warmed up to me instantly, like she’s known me for the longest time,” Hiền said. β€œShe immediately nibbled on my hand, and she kept putting her booty against me for pets.”

Pearl had plenty of energy, too. She raced around the property, brought Hiền pieces of firewood from the bonfire pit and dashed about excitedly, clearly hoping her new friend would join in the fun.

Before long, the couple had fallen under Pearl’s spell. What was supposed to be a quiet weekend getaway had turned into a delightful visit with a dog who seemed to have appointed herself their personal entertainer.

But Pearl’s affection wasn’t limited to playtime.

Whenever Hiền needed to go inside the Airbnb, Pearl would wait patiently outside the door until she came back. She seemed perfectly content just knowing her new friend was nearby.

And the next morning, Pearl made sure Hiền wouldn’t forget about her.

β€œShe was the first one to greet me at 6:30 a.m. the next day … she knew her sad face would get us outside playing with her,” Hiền said.

Of course, it worked. The couple was more than happy to spend time with Pearl, who greeted each new day with the same enthusiasm and playful energy.

β€œShe would run around and bring me a firewood log from the bonfire pit and run around me to play with her,” Hiền said. β€œ[She] had the zoomies.”

Pearl seemed to have endless ways to make their stay special. Whether she was racing around the spacious property or leaning against Hiền for affection, she made sure the couple never felt alone in their mountain retreat.

β€œI instantly fell head over heels with Pearl,” Hiền said. β€œ[She] made the experience of staying at the beautiful Airbnb even more enjoyable. The silliness, the loyalty and the way she roamed around the big space they had, it made my experience staying in a remote cabin sooo much better.”

Unfortunately, even the loveliest weekends have to come to an end.

When it was finally time for Hiền and her husband to pack their belongings and head home, they realized that leaving the beautiful cabin wasn’t the hardest part. Saying goodbye to Pearl was.

β€œWe were devastated …” Hiền said.

As the couple made their way to their car, Pearl followed close behind. She even walked over to Hiền’s side of the vehicle and watched as they began to drive away.

β€œIt was the saddest moment of my entire trip!” Hiền said.

For a dog who had spent the weekend making sure her guests felt welcome, watching them leave must have been a bittersweet moment. Pearl had given them so much affection in such a short time that saying goodbye felt surprisingly difficult.

Still, Pearl was familiar with the routine. After her new friends departed, she returned to her comfortable bed in the main house, ready to welcome the next visitors who would arrive at the property.

Hiền and her husband haven’t returned to the Airbnb yet, but Pearl has clearly left a lasting impression on them.

β€œI really miss Pearl,” Hiền said.

Their mountain getaway gave them beautiful views and a peaceful place to unwind, but the memory they carried home was something far more special: a playful yellow Lab who treated two strangers like lifelong friends and made their weekend unforgettable.

Sometimes, the best part of a trip isn’t the destination itself. It’s the unexpected friend who makes you wish you could stay just a little longer.
