βI walked around the corner to the bottom of the stairs and was met by dogs on every step.”
On a rainy day in GoiΓ’nia, Brazil, real estate agent JoΓ£o Dourado was driving home with his 11-year-old daughter when something unusual caught his attention.
Just beyond the road, sitting in the median, Dourado thought he had spotted a capybara.

Seeing one in the middle of an urban area immediately surprised him.
βI was surprised, because it was in an urban area,β Dourado said.
While they were stopped at a traffic light, Dourado pointed out the animal to his daughter. She was thrilled by the unexpected sighting.

But as they watched, something seemed wrong.
The supposed capybara wasn’t moving.
Dourado began to worry that the animal might have been injured.
βI thought she was hurt,β he said. βMaybe she got hit by a car and was lying there quietly like that.β
He was so concerned that he was considering stopping and calling the fire department to get help for the animal.

Then the traffic light changed.
As Dourado drove closer, he finally discovered the truth.
There was no capybara.
The mysterious animal was actually a log.
Its shape, combined with the wet conditions and the distance, had created an incredibly convincing illusion.
Dourado was relieved to realize that there was no injured animal lying helplessly beside the road. His family, however, found the whole situation hilarious.

βEveryoneβs been cracking up about it,β Dourado said. βSaying, βMan, heβs really getting old β he couldnβt see what it was.ββ
Still, Dourado couldn’t resist returning to the spot after the rain stopped.
He wanted to take another look at the log that had caused all the confusion.
And seeing it again, it was easy to understand how he had made the mistake.

The wet log really did have an uncanny resemblance to a capybara sitting quietly in the grass.
There was no injured animal to rescue that day, but Dourado’s reaction showed that his first instinct was to help what he believed was a creature in trouble.
In the end, the only thing that needed rescuing was his pride.
βIβm still laughing about it to this day,β Dourado said.
