“Absolutely amazing!”
Hummingbirds are already some of the most eye-catching animals in nature.
Their shimmering feathers can flash brilliant shades of green, blue, red and purple as they dart through the air, often disappearing before anyone gets the chance to study them closely.
But when wildlife photographer Nicolas Reusens managed to capture an extraordinary close-up of one hummingbird, his photos revealed something even dedicated bird lovers may never have noticed before.
Around the bird’s eye was a delicate row of tiny feathers that looked remarkably similar to eyelashes.
A Close-Up Revealed Something Unexpected
Reusens regularly photographs wildlife, with hummingbirds among the subjects that appear frequently in his work.
During a visit to the Hummingbird Sanctuary, or Santuario de Colibríes, in Mexico City, he had the opportunity to photograph one of the tiny birds at extremely close range.
When he later examined the images, one detail immediately stood out.
Surrounding the hummingbird’s eye were minute, evenly arranged feathers.
They were so neat and symmetrical that they appeared almost intentionally designed.
Reusens was amazed by the precision of the tiny feathers, describing the arrangement as one of the most striking details he had noticed while photographing the bird.
They Look Just Like Tiny Eyelashes
From a distance, hummingbirds move far too quickly for people to notice such tiny features.
But Reusens’ detailed photographs made the feather arrangement impossible to miss.
The small feathers formed a delicate border around the eye, giving the hummingbird the appearance of having miniature eyelashes.
Of course, they aren’t eyelashes in the same way humans have them. They are feathers surrounding the eye.
Still, the resemblance is remarkable.
And the discovery surprised someone who has spent years working closely with hummingbirds.
Even A Hummingbird Expert Had Never Seen Them Like This
Catia Lattouf has spent nearly two decades rescuing and rehabilitating hummingbirds at the Hummingbird Sanctuary.
Each year, hundreds of sick or injured hummingbirds pass through her care before being released back into the wild.
Her experience has also led her to help train and advise other hummingbird rescuers around the world.
Yet when Lattouf saw Reusens’ close-up photographs, she was stunned.
Despite years of observing hummingbirds at extremely close range, she had never seen the tiny feather arrangement captured with such clarity.
The symmetry reminded her more of artwork than something found naturally on such a small bird.
Hummingbirds Are Full Of Hidden Details
Part of what makes hummingbirds so fascinating is how much of their beauty can easily go unnoticed.
Their rapid movements make it difficult to appreciate every detail with the naked eye.
Photography changes that.
By freezing a moment that would normally pass in a fraction of a second, close-up images can reveal textures, colors and features that people might otherwise never see.
In this case, the photographs offered an entirely new perspective on something as small as the feathers surrounding a hummingbird’s eye.
A Closer Look Makes Them Even More Remarkable
Hummingbirds have fascinated people for generations because of their speed, brilliant colors and unusual ability to hover in place.
But Reusens’ photographs show that some of their most impressive features are also among the smallest.
At first glance, a hummingbird’s beauty comes from its dazzling colors and graceful flight.
Look a little closer, though, and there is even more to discover.
Sometimes, all it takes is one perfectly timed photograph to reveal a detail nature had been hiding in plain sight.
