He didn’t give up hope 💔
About a month ago, Eva zu Beck noticed a German shepherd wandering near a busy road in the small Polish village where she lives.
Because she has a German shepherd of her own, zu Beck initially thought her dog had somehow escaped.
Then she took a closer look.
“[I]nitially I thought it was my dog that somehow escaped our cabin and got lost, but this German shepherd was starved and matted and clearly in distress,” zu Beck shared on Instagram.
After speaking with people in the area, she learned the dog had reportedly been abandoned there roughly two weeks earlier.
And he hadn’t really left.
According to zu Beck, the German shepherd continued waiting near the same corner, investigating cars that slowed down as though he still believed the person who left him might return.
“Ever since then, this dog has not left this corner, waiting for his person to come back, sniffing at every car that slows down,” she said.
The dog’s loyalty made the situation even more heartbreaking.
He appeared frightened and confused, but he still seemed unwilling to give up hope.
Local authorities had already tried to catch him, but he was too nervous to let anyone approach. Whenever someone came too close, he disappeared into the nearby woods.
“He hasn’t let anyone approach,” zu Beck said.
She knew forcing the situation would only make him more afraid.
So instead, she started building trust.
Over the next several days, zu Beck returned with fragrant food and patiently allowed the dog to get used to her presence.
Little by little, he began coming closer.
Eventually, he trusted her enough to eat directly from her hand.
After several days of careful work, zu Beck was finally able to secure the dog with assistance from a tranquilizer.
She lifted him into the back of her truck and immediately took him to a veterinarian.
“I was so relieved, I could cry,” zu Beck said.
She named him Atlas.
Once he was away from the roadside and settled somewhere safe, Atlas began revealing a completely different personality.
The frightened dog who had spent weeks fleeing from people turned out to be affectionate, playful and eager for attention.
“[T]urns out our flighty, feral boy is just a big baby,” zu Beck wrote in an update on Instagram.
Over the following weeks, Atlas continued growing more comfortable and confident.
Zu Beck would have loved to keep him, but she already cares for a large German shepherd and felt Atlas deserved a home where he could receive plenty of individual attention.
Fortunately, a potential adopter is already waiting for him.
If everything goes as planned, the dog who once spent his days watching cars for someone who never returned will soon have a family that chooses to stay.
“Maybe this is how he finds his loving, beautiful forever home,” zu Beck said.
