From heartbreak to happiness.
A routine patrol became an unexpected rescue for Trooper Kronander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol when he noticed something unusual near the edge of a highway rest stop.
Sitting off to the side of the parking area was a metal crate.
Inside, he found a young dog who had apparently been left there alone.
The puppy had every reason to be frightened, but Kronander approached him calmly and immediately began trying to make him feel safe.
The moment was captured in body-camera footage.
As soon as the crate was opened, the puppy’s personality came rushing out.
Instead of hiding, he bounced excitedly around the trooper while Kronander crouched down to greet and play with him.
After giving the dog some attention, Kronander placed him in the front seat of his patrol car and drove him away from the rest stop.
The puppy was eventually taken to the Medina County SPCA, where staff began caring for him and looking into the circumstances surrounding his abandonment.
The shelter made it clear just how dangerous the situation could have been.
“Someone made the conscious decision to leave this puppy behind in a crate along a busy interstate, putting this little life at tremendous risk,” the SPCA wrote in a Facebook post.
“This puppy was completely dependent on someone to provide for their safety and well-being. Instead, they were simply left there.”
Fortunately, the little dog’s time at the shelter turned out to be brief.
Staff named him Miles, and after receiving veterinary care, he was soon ready for adoption.
He barely had time to wait.
The very day Miles became available, a Medina County Sheriff’s officer and his family welcomed him into their home.
“The puppy (we named him Miles) is doing wonderful,” Humane Officer Rachel Batten said. “He just got neutered yesterday and went right to his new home with a Medina County Sheriff’s Officer and his family today, the very second he became available!”
Miles’ story began with someone leaving him behind in a crate.
But because one trooper happened to notice him, it ended with a family ready to give him the kind of life he should have had all along.
“Despite the cruel circumstances from which he came to us, he ended up right where he needed to be to find a family who will love and cherish him!” Batten said.
