He and his family were so shocked!

When a boy named Levi spotted a small animal lying alone beside the road on his walk home from school in May, he immediately stopped to help.

The youngster looked like a puppy in distress, so Levi carefully picked him up and brought him home.

His family then took the animal to a veterinarian, expecting to learn more about their unexpected canine guest.

Instead, they received a surprising diagnosis.

The β€œpuppy” was actually a baby coyote.

A Surprising Discovery at the Vet

Levi and his family were understandably shocked to learn the truth.

But the discovery did not change the fact that the young animal desperately needed help.

The coyote had suffered a broken leg and would have struggled to survive on his own without treatment.

The family was simply relieved that Levi had found him when he did.

Kojo Begins His Recovery

The injured coyote was transferred to Detroit Animal Welfare Group, where rescuers named him Kojo.

Once in professional care, he began receiving treatment for his damaged leg.

Over time, the injury healed, and Kojo steadily grew stronger.

What had once looked like a helpless little puppy soon began developing into a healthy young coyote.

He Found a Wild Pack of His Own

Because Kojo is a wild animal, rescuers wanted to make sure he grew up around others of his species rather than becoming overly accustomed to people.

He was introduced to two other wild coyotes being cared for by the organization.

The three have since formed their own small pack and are being prepared for life outside the rescue.

According to DAWG, the plan is for all three coyotes to eventually be released into the wild together.

Preparing Kojo for Freedom

Wildlife rehabilitation is about much more than simply healing an injury.

Rescuers must also make sure an animal develops the behaviors and independence needed to survive without human assistance.

Growing up alongside other coyotes gives Kojo an opportunity to interact naturally and develop skills that will help him once he is released.

His caregivers are now looking forward to the day when he and his companions can return to the wild.

Levi Continued Helping After the Rescue

Levi’s role in Kojo’s story did not end when the young coyote entered rehabilitation.

His family was so grateful for the care Kojo received that they chose Detroit Animal Welfare Group as an honoree for gifts connected with Levi’s bar mitzvah.

The gesture provided another way for Levi to support the organization caring for the animal he had rescued.

One Small Decision Changed Kojo’s Future

If Levi had simply continued walking that afternoon, Kojo’s story might have ended very differently.

Instead, he noticed an animal in trouble, stopped to help and brought him somewhere he could receive professional care.

That act of kindness gave the injured coyote a chance to heal, grow and eventually return to the wild.

From β€œLost Puppy” to Wild Coyote

Levi may have originally believed he was rescuing an abandoned puppy, but he ended up helping something far more unexpected.

Now, Kojo is healthy, living alongside other coyotes and preparing for the next stage of his life.

For Levi, his family and the rescuers who watched him recover, seeing the tiny roadside animal grow into a strong young coyote has made the entire experience unforgettable.
