The two-foot-long cottonmouth snake was still alive when it was found inside the Maumelle High School player’s helmet.
A high school football player in Arkansas got an alarming surprise during practice after discovering a venomous snake hidden inside the helmet he had been wearing for nearly an hour.
The roughly two-foot-long snake had apparently crawled underneath the helmet’s padding and remained unnoticed until the student spotted unusual movement inside the headgear.
Snake Discovered After Warmups
The incident happened Thursday at Maumelle High School, where the player brought his helmet to athletic staff after completing warmups.
When staff members inspected it, they discovered a cottonmouth snake tucked inside.
Maumelle High School Athletic Director Kirk Horton said the discovery left everyone stunned.
“It really was just shock and disbelief,” Horton told KARK. “I’ve got a better shot at winning the lottery than seeing this in my ten years.”
Animal Services Called to the School
Maumelle Animal Services was contacted to safely remove the snake.
Officers placed the animal into a container before relocating it to a nearby river.
Animal Services Director Chris Davis said the initial report suggested the snake might have been a copperhead. After officers arrived and examined it, however, they identified it as a cottonmouth.
Fortunately, the student was not reported to have been bitten.
A Reminder to Check Outdoor Gear
Following the incident, the Maumelle Animal Shelter urged residents to inspect equipment that has been stored outdoors before using it.
The shelter advised people to quickly check helmets, shoes, gloves and other outdoor gear before putting them on, noting that a few seconds of caution could prevent a frightening encounter.
Why the Snake May Have Chosen the Helmet
Cottonmouths are venomous snakes found in Arkansas and are known to seek out sheltered spaces.
The dark, enclosed area beneath the helmet padding may have provided exactly the kind of hiding place the snake was looking for.
The unusual discovery has now become a memorable warning for athletes and anyone else who leaves clothing or equipment outdoors: always check before putting it on.
