An Unusual Discovery in the Yard
What began as an ordinary summer day in Austin, Texas, quickly turned into an unexpected wildlife rescue.
While spending time outside, two homeowners noticed something strange near their underground sprinkler system. A long snake was lying across the grass, with its head trapped inside one of the narrow openings of a green plastic sprinkler cover.
The snake had likely slipped through the opening while searching for food. Unfortunately, after pushing its head inside, it discovered that the gap was far too small to escape through.
A Careful Rescue Mission Begins
Realizing the animal could not free itself, the homeowners immediately stepped in to help.
They cautiously removed the entire plastic cover from the sprinkler system without disturbing the trapped snake. With the animal still wedged inside, they transported it to Austin Wildlife Rescue, where trained professionals could safely handle the situation.
One Frightened and Uncooperative Patient
As soon as the snake arrived, the rescue team began working to release it from the plastic cover.
However, the frightened animal did not understand that the rescuers were trying to help. Feeling trapped and threatened, it repeatedly struck at anyone who came close, making the delicate procedure even more challenging.
The team affectionately described their impatient patient as a “grumpy fella,” but they remained determined to save him.
A Calmer Approach
To prevent the snake from injuring itself or the rescuers, the team decided to gently sedate it.
Once the animal was calm, they carefully resumed the extraction process. Working slowly and patiently, the rescuers guided the snake backward through the opening until its head was finally free.
Remarkably, the animal escaped the ordeal with only a few minor scratches and bruises along its underside.
Rest, Recovery and a Happy Ending
After examining the snake, the rescue team was relieved to discover that it was otherwise healthy and had not suffered any serious injuries.
With time to rest and some attentive care, the snake quickly recovered from its stressful experience. It was soon back to its normal self, much to the delight of everyone involved in the rescue.
