β€œShe’d been there for around 16 hours …”

One morning late last year, Louis Grice and his wife, Sylwia, were awakened by the sound of a puppy crying outside their home in Bulgaria. Curious and concerned, they stepped into their backyard to investigate.

There, tucked beneath the metal frame of a large dog crate, they found an incredibly small puppy trembling with fear.

The frightened little dog looked exhausted and confused, so the couple immediately brought her indoors to provide warmth, comfort, and safety.

As relieved as they were to have found her, one question continued to trouble them: How had such a tiny puppy ended up inside their fenced yard?

Because the property was securely enclosed, it seemed impossible that she had wandered in on her own.

Hoping to solve the mystery, Louis reviewed footage from the home’s security cameras. What he discovered was heartbreaking.

The recordings showed an unidentified person arriving at the property the previous evening carrying the puppy inside a plastic bag. After removing her from the bag, the individual simply tossed the tiny dog through a narrow gap in the fence before leaving.

The footage also revealed that the puppy had remained alone in the backyard for approximately sixteen hours before her cries finally woke the couple the following morning.

Thankfully, despite the frightening ordeal, the puppy had escaped without any serious injuries.

The couple named her Lottie and began caring for her while she recovered. As she settled into her temporary home, her frightened demeanor gradually disappeared.

Lottie quickly revealed herself to be an energetic and affectionate puppy. She loved curling up beside her rescuers for cuddles just as much as she enjoyed playing with the other dogs in their care.

Her growing confidence reassured the couple that she was leaving her difficult start behind.

Helping abandoned dogs is nothing new for Louis and Sylwia. Originally from the United Kingdom and Poland, the pair first visited Bulgaria on vacation. After witnessing the country’s large population of homeless dogs, they decided to remain there and dedicate themselves to animal rescue.

Since then, they have helped rescue more than 120 dogs, giving countless abandoned animals the opportunity to begin new lives.

Lottie is the latest puppy to benefit from their compassion.

The couple plans to continue caring for her until she is healthy enough to travel. Once she is fully ready, they intend to place her with a loving forever family, where the painful experience of being abandoned will become nothing more than a distant memory.

Thanks to one compassionate couple and an unexpected early-morning cry for help, Lottie’s story is no longer defined by abandonment but by hope, safety, and the promise of a brighter future.
