β€œIt scared and impressed me.”

Earlier this year, Guadalupe and a few friends were spending a peaceful day at Playa Chapadmalal in Argentina. The beach was sunny, scenic and busy with visitors enjoying the sand and ocean.

But their relaxing afternoon suddenly took an unexpected turn.

A young elephant seal, who apparently considered that part of the beach one of his favorite resting spots, began moving straight toward them. Unfortunately for Guadalupe and her friends, they had unknowingly set up their belongings right where the seal wanted to lounge.

As the large marine animal approached, the group quickly realized they needed to move. Their towels, bags and other beach items were suddenly no match for a determined elephant seal.

Guadalupe said the encounter was both frightening and impressive. Seeing such a powerful wild animal up close was not something she had expected during a normal beach day.

Thankfully, Guadalupe and her friends did the right thing by backing away and giving the seal plenty of space. Wildlife experts advise people not to approach, touch or disturb marine animals on the beach, even if they seem calm.

A ranger also appeared to be nearby, helping keep other beachgoers at a safe distance while the elephant seal settled in.

It is unclear how long the group had to wait before the seal moved along and they could collect their scattered belongings. But one thing is certain: their ordinary beach outing became a story they will never forget.

The elephant seal may have interrupted their plans, but he also gave them a rare reminder that beaches are shared spaces β€” and sometimes, wildlife gets first choice of the best spot.
