“It’s one of those moments that reminds you why you do this work.”
When Debbie arrived at Holbrook Animal Care and Control in Holbrook, Arizona, the odds were stacked heavily against her. She couldn’t walk. X-rays revealed old wounds consistent with a pellet gun — evidence of a past that no animal should ever have to endure. And yet, despite everything, her spirit was completely intact.
“She had clearly experienced trauma, but what stood out most was her spirit — she was gentle, sweet and still sought out human connection,” said Shannon Steemke, founder and president of Cooper’s Chance Animal Rescue. “Even in that condition, her tail would wag, and she leaned into affection.”
An Uncertain Road Ahead
The medical picture was serious. While Debbie’s spine was intact, she had sustained extensive nerve damage, and no one could say with any certainty whether she would ever walk again. The immediate priority was simply keeping her comfortable.
“The focus was on keeping her comfortable, managing pain and giving her the best quality of life possible,” Steemke said.
As it became clear that Debbie’s needs exceeded what the shelter could provide, she was transferred to Cooper’s Chance Animal Rescue — an organisation with a long-standing relationship with Holbrook and a team willing to take on the unknown.

“We have worked with Holbrook for many years, so when they reached out for help with Debbie, we didn’t hesitate to help, even though we had no idea what to expect,” Steemke said.
Small Steps, Big Heart
By the time Debbie arrived at Cooper’s Chance, she had made some small but encouraging progress. She had learned to use a wheelchair, giving her a degree of independence and mobility she hadn’t had before. The rescue team placed her in a foster home, began physical therapy and surrounded her with the kind of love and patience she had long deserved.
Day after day, Debbie astonished everyone around her. She approached each challenge with a quiet determination and an unshakeable warmth toward the people caring for her.

“Despite everything she went through, Debbie has remained incredibly loving and trusting of people,” Steemke said.
The Moment Nobody Saw Coming
And then, against all expectations, something miraculous happened. Debbie learned to walk again.
For everyone who had been part of her journey, it was an emotional moment that was somehow both shocking and entirely fitting. From the very first day, Debbie had carried herself with a resilience that set her apart. She had never stopped trying, never stopped trusting, never stopped wagging her tail. In the end, that spirit carried her all the way back to her own two feet.

“Watching her go from being unable to stand to taking steps on her own was emotional for everyone involved,” Steemke said. “It’s one of those moments that reminds you why you do this work.”
One Last Hurdle — Finding Her Forever Home
Debbie still has a slight wobble in her step, but she is walking, and she is thriving. Now, the next chapter of her story is waiting to be written — and it begins with the right family.

“Debbie would do best in a loving, patient home that understands her journey and is committed to continuing her care as needed,” Steemke said. “While she’s come so far, she may always have some unique needs, and she deserves a family who sees her for who she is: happy, resilient and full of love.”
