Rescuers called it an Easter miracle.
In California’s Mojave Desert, a hiker was passing through a rocky area when he suddenly heard a mother dog barking from the top of a huge pile of boulders. At first, it was unclear whether she was warning him to stay away or trying to get his attention. But when he looked closer, he realized there were puppies hidden nearby beneath the rocks.
The hiker stopped, took a photo and posted it online, asking for help. That post quickly reached Faith Easdale of Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue, a rescuer known for going into difficult and dangerous places to save animals.
People began sending the post to Easdale because they knew she would do whatever she could to help. After seeing the situation, she asked her friend and fellow rescuer Mike Ryan to meet the hiker in the desert and check on the dogs.
Ryan drove out to the area, where the hiker guided him to the spot. When they arrived, Ryan saw the mother dog, who was beautiful but too scared to let anyone approach. Then he spotted where the puppies were hiding — deep under a large cluster of boulders.
The problem was that the space was far too narrow for Ryan to reach them. At 6 feet 7 inches tall, he knew there was no way he could squeeze through the crevices. The hiker couldn’t fit either, and with darkness approaching, Ryan called Easdale for help.
The next day was Easter Sunday, but Ryan and Easdale gave up their holiday plans to return to the desert. The hiker also came back to help guide them. Together, they carried a humane trap, supplies and rescue equipment through the brutal heat and across the rocky terrain.
The climb was difficult. They had to move up, across and down a steep boulder-covered area while carrying heavy gear. But they were determined to get the little family to safety.
First, they focused on the mother dog. They placed treats inside the trap, and before long, they were able to safely catch her. The rescuers covered the trap to give her shade and kept her close enough to see her puppies.
Then came the hardest part: reaching the babies.
Easdale crawled down toward the opening and turned her body sideways to fit between the rocks. She moved aside small stones and dirt, but the space was still incredibly tight. With her flashlight, she could see the puppies hidden inside.
Four of the puppies eventually came out from beneath the boulders, and the rescuers quickly reunited them with their mother. But five more were still trapped deeper under a massive rock.
Easdale knew she had to try another way in. The men warned her that she might get stuck, but she carefully squeezed through a narrow opening, twisting her shoulders and turning her head to make her way down.
Finally, she reached the remaining puppies. One by one, she passed them up to safety.
After hours in the hot desert sun, all nine puppies had been rescued. But Easdale still had to get herself out from under the boulders. Climbing back up was even harder than getting in, and for a moment, she feared she might be trapped. Still, she stayed calm and slowly worked her way free.
Ryan and the hiker watched nervously until Easdale finally made it out. Together, the rescuers gathered the mother dog and her puppies and made the careful journey back down the rocky ridge.
The whole rescue was only possible because several people acted with kindness and refused to give up. The mother dog barked, the hiker noticed, the post reached the right people and the rescuers were willing to brave the heat and rocks to save them.
Afterward, the mama dog and her puppies were placed with fosters and rescue groups. Ryan, who fostered some of the puppies, described the rescue as an Easter miracle. If the mother dog had not barked at exactly the right moment, the hiker may never have seen them, and the little family might have remained hidden in the desert.
Now, thanks to that one bark and the teamwork of everyone involved, the “miracle babies” have a chance at safe, happy lives.
