“[He was] so dirty … so hungry … so scared …”

While searching through a Los Angeles County neighborhood recently, Suzette Hall kept thinking about a dog she had seen mentioned online. A small shaggy white pup was somewhere nearby, far from where he belonged.

According to the post, the dog had escaped from a shelter and had been surviving on his own for seven days, hiding in an unfamiliar area and trying to get by.

Hall, who leads Logan’s Legacy 29, could not shake the image of him alone and frightened. When a Good Samaritan later reported seeing the dog miles away from the shelter, Hall immediately headed out to find him.

She drove through the neighborhood, checking every street and looking anywhere he might be hiding.

At first, there was nothing.

Then she spotted a flash of white beneath a car.

A tiny head peeked out, and Hall knew she had found him.

She had expected a white dog with long, messy fur, but seeing him in person was still heartbreaking. He was filthy, clearly starving, and badly scared after spending a week on the run.

Hall quickly set up a humane trap with food and backed away, hoping hunger would convince him to go inside.

It worked almost at once.

The little dog, exhausted and desperate for food, entered the trap right away.

Hall and fellow rescuer Rosario Ortiz carefully loaded him into the car and drove him to the vet. On the way, Hall contacted the shelter he had escaped from and asked if her rescue could keep him permanently.

The shelter agreed.

She named him Ricochet and was overjoyed knowing he would never have to return to the place he had fled. After all the fear and loneliness he had endured, he was finally safe.

At the clinic, Ricochet got good news — he passed his health exam. Then he received a warm bath and a much-needed haircut that completely changed how he looked.

After his grooming, Ricochet looked like an entirely different dog.

Now, a few weeks after his rescue, he is feeling much better and waiting for a forever home. Until the right family finds him, Hall is making sure he stays surrounded by love, comfort, and the reassurance that he truly matters.
