“It’s a really beautiful thing to witness.”
Last week, a kind passerby found a cluster of fluffy kittens and two adult cats tucked beneath an old camper on an isolated piece of land in northern Georgia. Worried about the vulnerable little family living without proper shelter, the person contacted Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters for assistance.
When rescuers arrived, they found 11 tiny kittens. While the shelter is used to helping large numbers of cats from that area, this case stood out for a different reason.
The kittens were actually being cared for by two mother cats at the same time.
According to Furkids, it is not impossible to see cats share parenting duties, but it is still fairly unusual. In this case, the two mothers were nursing each other’s kittens, pooling their resources, and working together to survive.
Once they were brought to the shelter, staff noticed that both mothers were thin and covered in dirt, though thankfully none of the cats appeared to be injured. The two adult cats were given full veterinary exams and vaccinations so they could continue caring for the babies in a healthier environment.
Now the whole group is in foster care, and both mothers are still raising the kittens side by side.
The tabby was named Mamacita, and the black-and-white cat was named Chicatina. Shelter staff say both are extremely loving with people as well as with the kittens, and they seem grateful for any extra help keeping their lively little ones under control.
Furkids believes Mamacita may actually be Chicatina’s mother, which could help explain the close bond between them.
Over the next few weeks, the shelter plans to continue observing the pair as the kittens grow and begin to wean. After that, staff will decide whether Mamacita and Chicatina should be considered a bonded pair. If so, the hope is that they can eventually be adopted together into one permanent home.
For now, the two mothers are focused on caring for their shared brood in the safety and warmth of foster care. Their foster caregiver says the cats sleep beside one another, and that Chicatina often looks to Mamacita for reassurance and direction as they parent together.
The shelter says watching their teamwork and trust has been something truly special.
