He had no idea.
The ocean is full of surprises — and some are much bigger than others.
Last year, a scuba diver exploring the waters off Indonesia had an unexpected encounter while swimming with a small remora fish. These sleek fish are usually seen hitching rides on sharks, but this one appeared to be on its own.
At least, that’s what the diver thought.
A massive surprise
As he focused on the curious little fish, something enormous was quietly approaching from behind.
A shadow grew larger in the water — and suddenly, the truth became clear.
A whale shark, the largest fish in the world, was gliding right toward them.
A gentle giant
The massive creature, stretching up to 40 feet long, passed calmly through the area where the diver, the remora and the camera operator had been moments before.
Despite their size, whale sharks are completely harmless to humans. They feed on tiny organisms like plankton and shrimp, filtering food as they swim.
Still, getting too close can be risky — not because they’re aggressive, but simply because of their sheer size.
Luckily, the divers had just enough time to move out of the way.
A reminder beneath the waves
The encounter was breathtaking — and a powerful reminder of how unpredictable the ocean can be.
“Respecting marine life is always our top priority,” the dive company shared. “It’s so important to admire from a distance.”
