“He seemed to feel I was helping.”
But one recent call tested both his skill — and his courage.
A Dangerous Situation In The Wild
Lehmann was alerted to a fallow deer buck in Victoria whose antlers had become tangled in discarded bedding material.
When he arrived, the situation was worse than expected.
The deer was stuck in a thorny blackberry bush, with the fabric wrapped tightly around his antlers and snagged on branches. Every movement only made the situation more dangerous.
A Risky Rescue Attempt
Knowing how unpredictable wild animals can be, Lehmann approached carefully.

At first, he tried to cut the material using a knife attached to a pole. But just as he reached in, the frightened deer broke free from the bush and ran off — still tangled.
Lehmann didn’t give up.
He chased after the deer and eventually caught up with him in a nearby clearing.
Working Against The Odds
Up close, Lehmann grabbed the tangled material and tried to remove it while the deer struggled.
He managed to cut some of it away — until his knife suddenly broke.
With no tools left, he had to finish the rescue with his bare hands.
A Moment Of Trust
Then something incredible happened.
As Lehmann continued working, the deer began to calm down.

“Something magic happened,” Lehmann later said. “He seemed to feel I was helping.”
For a brief moment, the frightened animal stopped resisting.
Freedom At Last
Taking advantage of that moment, Lehmann removed the remaining material.
Finally free, the deer ran off into the forest — no longer weighed down or in danger.
A Powerful Reminder
For Lehmann, the rescue was more than just another call.
It was a rare and powerful moment of connection between human and wild animal — one built entirely on trust.
And thanks to that moment, a life was saved. 🦌💚
