He’s “impressively large” for a 10-year-old.

Bernard is about 10 years old, lives in Brighton, and stretches nearly 8 feet long. He’s also a boa constrictor — and, according to RSPCA (England & Wales), their longest-staying snake.

Bernard arrived at the Brighton Animal Centre in December 2021. Since then, he has spent nearly 1,500 days waiting for the right home.

Despite his size, staff describe him as a gentle giant. Volunteers often share photos of Bernard calmly resting his head on their knees or lounging comfortably in their laps.

A Big Snake With Big Needs

While Bernard’s calm temperament makes him a standout, his future family must meet some important requirements.

Because of his length, he needs a spacious enclosure measuring at least 8 feet long, 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The charity emphasizes that snakes should be able to fully stretch out — a standard increasingly supported by reptile welfare research.

In addition, Bernard requires proper heating, lighting and environmental enrichment to stay healthy.

The organization has reassured supporters that they will only place him with an experienced keeper who can provide the right setup and long-term care.

A Long-Term Commitment

Boas are not short-term pets.

According to the Royal Veterinary College, well-cared-for boas can live 30 years or more in captivity.

That means Bernard could remain with his future family well into the 2040s.

Waiting for the Right Home

For now, Bernard continues to charm visitors at the Brighton Animal Centre. Staff hope that his striking tan-and-brown markings — and his calm personality — will soon win over an experienced reptile enthusiast ready for a long commitment.

After nearly four years in care, this gentle giant is still waiting for someone who sees not just his size, but his steady presence and quiet appeal.
