β€œShe was, like, the most friendly dog ever.”

Starving Dog Found in Texas Road Finds Hope, Healing, and a Forever Home

A heartbreaking rescue in Cleveland, Texas, turned into a powerful story of compassion, resilience, and second chances when a severely emaciated dog was discovered barely able to stand.

A Shocking Discovery on the β€œDumping Grounds”

Zully Vasquez Ventura had just turned onto a road in her community known for abandoned animals when she saw something that made her heart drop.

In the middle of the road stood one of the most malnourished dogs she had ever seen.

Ventura slammed on her brakes and ran to the dog’s side.

β€œShe was really weak,” Ventura said. β€œShe would walk a few steps and collapse. She had no food, no water, and no shelter from the sun.”

A Neighborhood in Crisis

The dog was found in Colony Ridge, an area notorious for a high number of neglected and abandoned animals. Ventura has rescued thousands of dogs from the area, but this one hit her especially hard.

Despite her condition, the dog wagged her tail and showed nothing but love.

β€œShe was the most friendly dog ever,” Ventura said. β€œIt was like a stab in the heart wondering how this even happened to her.”

Brought to Her Knees by Heartbreak

Overcome with emotion, Ventura broke down in the road.

β€œI started crying. I called my husband and said, β€˜I don’t know why I keep coming to these streets. I know what I’m going to find,’” she said.

Her husband reminded her that compassion is never a mistake β€” and that she was exactly where she needed to be.

Help Arrives Just in Time

Ventura shared the dog’s story on social media. Within 20 minutes, Diann Thomason from Three Little Pitties Rescue responded.

β€œWhen I saw Zully crying and then saw the dog, I knew I had to help,” Thomason said.

She rushed to the scene, where the dog gave her a kiss. Thomason named her Tabitha and immediately brought her to the rescue’s medical clinic.

Fighting for Her Life

Tabitha was severely malnourished and suffering from advanced mange. Every bone in her body could be felt.

β€œI thought she was going to die,” Thomason said. β€œBut her tail never stopped wagging. Dogs are so forgiving β€” it still amazes me.”

A Beautiful Transformation

With medical care, nourishment, and love, Tabitha began to heal. Her fur grew back, and her spirit shone through.

β€œSeeing her fur come back was amazing,” Thomason said.

A Long Road to a Forever Home

When Tabitha was ready, she was listed for adoption. A family in Vancouver, Canada, felt like the perfect match.

Because Tabitha was afraid of crates and cars, Thomason personally drove her from Texas to Washington state so she could meet her adopter comfortably.

Their first meeting was magical β€” full of treats, wagging tails, and instant love.

A Story That Restores Hope

When Ventura saw the reunion video, she cried again β€” but this time with joy.

β€œThis reminds me there is hope,” she said. β€œIt gives me strength. God put me here to help these dogs. Seeing her go to a new family makes it all worth it.”
