“They both just love each other.”

At first glance, Fiona and her next-door neighbor, Kili, don’t look like they belong together. Fiona is a small corgi, while Kili — an Alaskan malamute — is enormous by comparison, standing much taller and outweighing her by nearly 100 pounds.

But size has never mattered to these two. Despite their obvious differences, they share a deep and joyful friendship.

For a long time, visiting Kili was the highlight of Fiona’s daily walks. No matter the weather, whenever Fiona passed Kili’s house, her larger friend would be outside waiting. Fiona barely needed encouragement — the moment she recognized where she was, she’d dash straight toward Kili’s driveway.

“She would take off running every time we left the house,” Fiona’s owner, Chris Equale, told The Dodo. And the excitement went both ways. “Kili starts wagging her tail as soon as she sees Fiona coming over the hill,” he said.

Their time together was filled with simple happiness. Sometimes they followed each other around the yard. Other times, they practiced tricks like offering a paw in exchange for treats. And on quieter days, they’d sit side by side or curl up together, content just being close.

“They genuinely adore each other,” Equale said.

Sadly, their routine was interrupted when the Equale family had to temporarily move out of their home due to an emergency repair. During the renovation period, Fiona no longer had access to Kili, and the two best friends were separated.

More than a year later, Chris and his wife, Sarah, returned to their house to check on the renovation progress. This time, they brought Fiona along — something they hadn’t done earlier because of construction hazards. The visit also meant something special: Fiona would finally get to see Kili again.

When the two dogs spotted each other, it was as if no time had passed at all. Their reunion was full of excitement, tail wags, and pure happiness — a moment Equale later shared on Instagram.

Their friendship dates back to when Fiona was just a puppy learning her neighborhood. Back then, the tiny corgi — whom Equale affectionately described as a “little potato” — felt unsure about the massive dog behind the fence. She’d lower her ears and shrink back whenever she passed Kili’s yard.

“From a size standpoint alone, she’s intimidating,” Equale admitted. He wasn’t certain the two dogs would be a good match.

But curiosity soon replaced fear. Fiona began wagging her tail whenever she walked by Kili. Within days, she gathered enough confidence to approach her.

“Once they let their guards down, everything changed,” Equale said.

From their first real interaction, the bond was immediate. “Kili is one of the gentlest dogs you’ll ever meet,” Equale said. “Looking back, it’s funny that we were ever worried.”

Despite her massive size, Kili is incredibly careful with her smaller friend. The two seem to understand each other instinctively, respecting each other’s space and limits. Kili often lets Fiona take the lead, happily following her cues.

Fiona thrives on attention — and Kili is more than happy to give it. She greets Fiona with enthusiastic tail wags, playful hops, and even howls of excitement.

“She’s huge, but she has the softest, kindest soul,” Equale said of Kili. “I think that’s why they connect so well. Size doesn’t matter to them. It feels like they share the same heart — and that’s what makes their friendship so special.”
