They were only a few weeks old.

As Jessie Shaw, cofounder of Fetch Dog Rescue in Westport, Connecticut, she’s used to seeing heartbreaking photos of animals in need. But one recent message from her partner group, Roadside Rescue Network in Mississippi, left her stunned.

A trash can had been abandoned outside the sanctuary — and inside were 11 tiny puppies, soaked, freezing, and barely clinging to life.

“A terrible rainstorm had just passed through,” Shaw told The Dodo. “The puppies were literally on the verge of drowning.”

The little ones, only a few weeks old, were piled on top of each other, struggling to breathe. Their rescuer quickly lifted them from the bin and rushed them to a veterinarian, where they received emergency care.

After several weeks of recovery at Roadside Rescue Network, the pups were finally strong enough to begin their new journeys. Shaw then took on the task of finding them forever homes.

“I personally spoke with every family,” she explained. “I even went on home visits to make sure each puppy was going exactly where they belonged.”

Her dedication paid off — all 11 puppies are now thriving with their new families, safe, loved, and finally able to experience the carefree joy of puppyhood.

Looking back, Shaw hopes the ordeal raises awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering pets to prevent such tragedies. She dreams of a day when laws require it, so no more litters are left in dangerous conditions.

“There’s truly nothing better than seeing them safe,” Shaw said. “It makes me so happy — and it’s what keeps me going.”
