“We were very surprised …”
Last month, fiancés Faith Black and Alberto Navarro made a discovery in their backyard that left them stunned — and led to the rescue of a very unlikely creature.
It all started when Faith noticed one of their dog’s old, forgotten toys sitting in the grass. When she picked it up, she was shocked to see a tiny face peeking out from inside.
Incredibly, a fully grown butterfly was trapped inside the hollow ball.
“We were very surprised,” Alberto told The Dodo. “The butterfly was too big to have crawled through the holes.”
How the Butterfly Got Stuck
The couple believes the insect’s journey began long before. Their theory? The butterfly had entered the toy as a caterpillar, formed a chrysalis inside, and eventually emerged — only to realize she was now too big to escape through the tiny openings.
With no way out, her survival depended on someone noticing her.
A Gentle Rescue
Determined to help, Faith and Alberto carefully cut open the ball. The butterfly, though free, lingered for a moment — her wings were ready, but she’d never had the chance to use them.
Then, with a burst of life, she flew straight to a nearby patch of flowers and began to feed.
“[She] went immediately towards a little field of flowers next to our house and just started eating,” Alberto said.
A Happy Ending — With One Small Sacrifice
Thanks to the couple’s quick action, the butterfly is now living her life in freedom instead of perishing inside the toy.
“It felt good,” Alberto reflected. “To save anything, really, just makes you feel good.”
The only casualty in this rescue? Their dog’s toy. But Alberto isn’t worried about that.
“I think he’d forgotten about it,” Alberto said. “We have plenty of other toys for him.”
