After 933 days, she finally found her perfect match.

After 933 Days in a Shelter, Tracy the Dog Finally Finds Her Forever Home

For two and a half years, a lovable but overlooked pup named Tracy waited at PAWS Chicago for someone to choose her. Despite her big heart, high energy, and loyal nature, she was passed over time and time again.

Why Tracy Was Overlooked

According to Allison Wunder, senior digital media manager at PAWS Chicago, many city adopters tend to seek out smaller, calmer breeds better suited for apartment living. Tracy, however, β€œjust kept growing,” which made it harder for her to be matched with a family.

Still, Tracy wasn’t without love. For 933 days, volunteers and staff made sure she received enrichment, training, and care.

β€œIt’s always hard to see a wonderful dog like Tracy get overlooked,” Wunder said. β€œBut no day at PAWS was wasted for Tracy.”

The Life-Changing Moment

Everything changed when Laura and her family visited the shelter looking to adopt. After meeting several dogs, they finally came face to face with Tracy.

β€œTracy locked eyes with Laura and laid her head in her hand,” Wunder recalled. β€œAbout 5 minutes in, they knew she was the one.”

It was clear that Tracy felt the same connection.

A Magical Goodbye Party

Before Tracy left, PAWS staff threw her a heartfelt farewell celebration. Over 40 friends, volunteers, and foster parents who had cared for Tracy over the years came to give her hugs, treats, and well wishes.

β€œThey certainly chose her, but to watch Tracy choose them right back was magical,” Wunder said.

A New Life of Love

Now settled into her new home, Tracy enjoys long walks, car rides, rope toys, and, most of all, being close to her family.

Laura expressed deep gratitude to PAWS staff for believing in Tracy and never giving up on her:

β€œDespite being in the shelter so long, Tracy held onto her spirit and her joy of life. She’s strong and confident, and she knows how to love because she was loved by the people at PAWS.”
