Law enforcement hopes others take note.

Sheriff’s Office Urges End to Inhumane Glue Traps After Chipmunk Rescue

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in Colorado is urging the public to stop using glue traps, a common but controversial method for catching unwanted animals.

These traps, designed to adhere to anything that touches them, are cruel by nature—indiscriminate in what they capture and often leading to slow, agonizing deaths for the creatures caught.

To shed light on their dangers, the sheriff’s office recently released body cam footage of a heart-wrenching rescue. At a local business, a tiny chipmunk had become stuck on a glue trap. Fortunately, Animal Control Officer Kylie Rupe responded in time.

“With some mineral oil and plenty of patience, she carefully freed the little critter and released it back into the wild,” the sheriff’s office wrote.

The chipmunk was lucky—but many animals caught in glue traps aren’t. Wildlife, pets, and even birds are routinely harmed by these devices.

A Plea for Humane Alternatives

The sheriff’s office hopes the incident will raise awareness and inspire more compassionate action when it comes to dealing with wildlife.

“Glue traps might seem like an easy solution,” the office wrote, “but they can cause a lot of harm to pets and wildlife, not just pests. If you are looking to remove unwanted guests, search for more humane options.”

From live traps to professional removal services, better solutions exist—ones that don’t risk unnecessary suffering.

“Let’s use solutions that keep all our neighbors safe,” the sheriff’s message concludes.
“No glue required.”
