She gets more confident every day.

From Frozen With Fear to Full of Joy: How Kita Found Her Confidence

Kita was just 10 months old when Cross Your Paws Rescue discovered her living alone on several acres of land, fending for herself through a harsh winter. When she was brought into foster care, her trauma was clear. “She would just sit in the corner and stare at the wall,” said Julie Cole, her foster mom. “She was completely shut down, broken.”

Terrified and withdrawn, Kita curled herself into tight spaces, avoided stairs, and panicked both at human contact and at being left alone. Her greatest fear was going outside — she would freeze in place, seemingly terrified of being abandoned again.

After some gentle coaxing, she began to open up — enough to cuddle with her foster mom. Not long after, Kita was adopted by Kayla Kovatch, who felt an instant connection with her from photos.

At first, it seemed like Kita had regressed. She hid, tucked herself under pillows, and stayed close to the bed — still afraid of the outdoors. But this time, she wasn’t alone.

Kayla’s dogs, Raven and Flair, became the key to Kita’s transformation. Watching her new siblings romp around outside gave her the courage to try too. “As she saw Flair and Raven take off, she felt a little bit more comfortable to take off as well,” Kayla said.

Little by little, Kita’s confidence grew. Walks became playtime. The backyard turned from a threat into a playground. Her personality began to shine through.

Now, Kita enjoys life surrounded by her loving family, including a new human sibling. No longer trying to disappear into corners, she’s a confident, joyful dog who knows she’s home.

As Kayla put it: “Her confidence has gone leaps and bounds.”
