“Nothing like this has ever happened to us.”
While vacationing in Sri Lanka, Oorjitha and her partner Ryan were zipping through the streets on a scooter, soaking up the scenery — when their trip took an unexpected turn.
Out of nowhere, a local boy stopped them, cradling a tiny, helpless puppy. Before they could ask any questions, he gently handed her over and walked away, leaving the stunned couple holding a fragile life in their hands.
“We were totally caught off guard,” Oorjitha recalled in a video for The Dodo. “One moment we were just exploring, and the next we had this little pup, and no clue what to do.”
But they knew one thing for sure: they couldn’t leave her behind.
The puppy, soon named Squish, was immediately taken to the vet, where she was treated for parasites and given medication. Flea-ridden and filthy, Squish was in desperate need of care — and love. So the couple brought her back to their hotel and gave her the first of many warm baths.
“She needed us,” Oorjitha said. “And we knew we couldn’t let her go back to the streets.”
As Squish settled in, she began to thrive. Her tiny personality blossomed — playful, cuddly, and utterly endearing. She followed them everywhere, becoming a tiny travel companion on their journey through Sri Lanka. But as their vacation drew to a close, reality set in: they couldn’t bring Squish back to Dubai.
Determined to find her a safe future, Oorjitha reached out to Lokku’s Dogs and Cats Care Foundation — a local rescue group. With their flight looming, time was tight, but in a stroke of luck, the organization found a foster home just in time.
Only, Squish never left.
Her foster family fell completely in love with her and decided to make the arrangement permanent — adopting her into their hearts and home.
What began as a spontaneous encounter on a scooter turned into a life-changing rescue for one tiny pup. Thanks to kindness, quick action, and a whole lot of love, Squish found the forever family she deserved.
