“I’m wondering if there are eggs already!”

They say it takes a village to raise a family, but sometimes, even wildlife needs a little extra help to get started.

Early last year, Elaine Buckner noticed a determined robin trying to build a nest in the drainpipe under her roof. Despite her best efforts, the bird struggled as twigs and leaves repeatedly fell through the pipe. After several unsuccessful attempts, Buckner and her fiancé decided to lend a hand. They purchased a plastic basket, typically used for serving fries, and secured it to the drainpipe to provide a stable base.

Before long, the robin embraced her new nest. “By the next morning, the basket was full of nesting materials,” Buckner shared with The Dodo. “I was thrilled to see her finally settled in. It’s such a perfect spot.”

As the robin became more comfortable, the couple eagerly anticipated the arrival of eggs. “She’s spent all morning in the nest today,” Buckner observed. “It’s the most time I’ve seen her there, so I think there might already be eggs!”

When Buckner shared the story on X, animal lovers rallied around the resilient bird, sending their best wishes. The heartwarming tale captivated audiences who anxiously awaited updates. By late December, Buckner delivered the exciting news: “We had eggs and babies!” she wrote.

The robin’s dream had come true, and her fledglings thrived, growing stronger under her care. Though Buckner left the parenting to the robin, she felt a deep sense of pride knowing she played a part in helping the little family flourish.

While it’s uncertain if the robin will return to nest again next year, Buckner and her fiancé are ready to assist her if she does. Whatever challenges may come, this compassionate duo is committed to ensuring their feathered friend’s story continues to inspire.
