“We had no choice.โ€

When employees at the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) discovered a dog tied up in the parking lot of their Sunnyslope campus, their hearts sank. Abandonments outside shelters happen far too often, but this time was differentโ€”a heartfelt note had been left with the dog.

The note revealed the familyโ€™s anguish over their decision:
โ€œIt is with heavy heart that we had to result to this, but due to unforeseen circumstances, we had no choice. This is Armando (Mando). He is 4 years old, Husky Labrador Mix. He has had his shots but might need them soon. Heโ€™s very friendly with dogs and people. He is prone to ear infections. We pray he finds a good home. God bless.โ€

The love Armandoโ€™s former family had for him was clear. Though leaving him in the parking lot wasnโ€™t ideal, the AHS staff understood that this heartbreaking choice came from desperation, not neglect. Armando had been a cherished member of his family, and lifeโ€™s challenges forced their hand.

โ€œIn addition to the loving note, it was clear that this sweet pup was well cared for by his previous family as he appeared to be in great condition when he was found,โ€ said Kelsey Dickerson, AHSโ€™s public information officer.

When the shelter team found Armando, he was shy and disoriented. The transition from a loving home to a shelter was difficult for him, but the staff did everything they could to help him feel safe. โ€œWith a little time as well as lots of patience (and hot dogs!), he quickly warmed up,โ€ Dickerson shared. โ€œAs stated in the note, Armando is an incredibly sweet boy who loves getting attention from people and playing with other dogs.โ€

Armandoโ€™s stay at the shelter was short-lived. On Christmas Eve, he found his forever family, bringing an end to his period of uncertainty. His new home, which includes a dog sister, has been a perfect match for him.

โ€œHe has been playing nonstop with his new dog sister, and sheโ€™s even been sharing โ€˜her couchโ€™ with him in between games of tug-of-war in the backyard,โ€ Dickerson said. โ€œHis new family said itโ€™s like he has been living with them since forever.โ€

Though Armandoโ€™s former family didnโ€™t want to give him up, they can take solace in knowing their beloved boy is now thriving, deeply loved, and happy in his new home.
