“I’d never seen kittens like that!”

Recently, when a person arrived at the Scituate Animal Shelter in Massachusetts to surrender three kittens, the shelter staff was immediately taken with them.

“It was one of those ‘cartoon moments’ — eyes wide and hearts melting,” Amanda Eddy Baker, the shelter’s director of programs and operations, recalled. “I’ve never seen kittens like these before!”

These little kittens were anything but ordinary. They belonged to the Selkirk Rex breed, known for their naturally curly fur and almost plush-like appearance.

“The staff was in awe, in the best way possible!” Baker added. “We see so many kittens each year, but it’s always a thrill when something this special comes in.”

As a relatively small shelter, Scituate Animal Shelter handles around 500 pet adoptions annually. The staff works hard to find loving homes for each pet, but when it came to these curly kittens, there was hardly any need to promote them. This week, the shelter posted about the kittens on Facebook in hopes of finding them homes — and the response was overwhelming.

“We received about 50 emails, which is a huge number for us!” Baker said. “I manage the emails, and they were just flooding in.” In fact, just 13 minutes after the post went live, all three kittens were adopted.

“It was a new record for us,” Baker said. “We’re really excited for them — they were already so social when they arrived, which is a great sign.”

While these three lucky kittens will soon have loving families, there are many other cats in the shelter still waiting for their forever homes. Though some may be shy or nervous at first, these cats are just as deserving of love and will undoubtedly bring joy to their new families.
