“As she felt better and got stronger, she got brighter and a bit more sassy.”
Debbie’s Second Chance: A Remarkable Rescue Journey
When Debbie was found alone in her home, the scene was deeply moving. After her owner passed away, she had spent two long weeks in solitude—waiting, quietly hoping someone would come.
Thankfully, help arrived just in time. Debbie was taken to Marin Humane in critical condition.

“She could barely stand,” said Sam W., shelter operations manager at Marin Humane. “She would eat and drink, but very slowly. She needed intensive care—special perches, a padded enclosure to prevent falls, heat lamps, specific lighting, gentle handling, and a highly enriched diet.”
Those first few weeks were tough. Debbie’s spirit was as fragile as her health. But as she began to heal, her personality slowly returned.
“As she gained strength, she got sassier and more expressive,” Sam shared. “It was incredible to watch her come back to life.”

Marin Humane eventually reached out to Debbie’s next of kin, who shared a surprising detail—Debbie is around 40 years old. She’s already lived a long life, but thanks to her rescuers, she’s starting a whole new chapter.
Now in a loving foster home, Debbie is thriving. Her personality shines brighter every day.
“She’s made such progress,” said Carina, Debbie’s foster caregiver. “At first, she was timid and would hiss quietly. But with a little patience—and some well-timed corn—she started showing curiosity. Now she comes to see what treats I’ve brought. I work beside her open enclosure, so we spend a lot of quiet time together. She’s still not ready for touch, but we’re working at her pace.”

Each morning, Debbie greets Carina with a chirpy “Hello,” and a playful “Whatcha doing?” She enjoys gazing out the window, especially when the garbage truck rolls by, and makes happy little sounds during meals.
Debbie is looking for a forever home—one that understands the needs of senior or special-needs parrots and has the patience to build trust slowly.

“She’d likely thrive in a calm environment with natural light and plenty of windows,” said Sam. “Someone who’s home often, but also respects her need for space.”
Debbie has been through so much, but now she’s surrounded by care, compassion, and the promise of a beautiful future.
