She’s looking for a family to help her get healthy.
A month ago, Minnie arrived at the Peterborough Humane Society after being discovered wandering near someoneโs home. Her rescuers quickly realized she had likely been abandoned after enduring severe neglect, as evidenced by her size.
At 27 pounds, Minnie was the largest cat many of her new friends had ever seen. Her coat was matted and dirty in places, as she struggled to groom herself due to her size. Moving around was a challenge, and it was clear she was very uncomfortable.
โWe aim to get Minnie down to around 15 to 17 pounds,โ said Heidi Wilkins, manager of community and shelter services at Peterborough Humane Society. โWeight loss in cats is a gradual process.โ
Despite her challenges, Minnie is adjusting to life at the shelter and is eager to charm potential adopters with her sweet personality.
โMinnie may start off a bit shy, but she warms up quickly once you greet her,โ Wilkins explained. โThough she must feel quite uncomfortable, she remains easygoing and enjoys meeting everyone. Her playful nature is a great asset in her weight loss journey.โ
Minnie seems blissfully unaware of her size and doesnโt let it hinder her enjoyment. While some find her appearance amusing, the shelter staff emphasize that Minnieโs charm will shine even brighter once she is more comfortable and healthy.
โMinnie would thrive in a quieter home with a family committed to her needs,โ Wilkins advised. โSheโs on a specialized metabolic diet and will need regular vet check-ups, as well as daily grooming to maintain her hygiene. Given her size, she won’t be able to jump high or evade other pets or small children, so a home with a calm, cat-friendly senior pet or older children would be ideal.โ
When not focused on her weight loss, Minnie dreams of a home with plenty of sunny spots to lounge in, and a loving family to help her stay healthy and happy.
