Petco has recently introduced a groundbreaking adoption-only policy for rabbits, recognizing their position as the third most popular companion animal in the United States. This significant move marks the end of their previous limited pilot program that permitted the sale of commercially bred rabbits. This decision highlights Petco’s commitment to connecting compassionate families with pets seeking loving homes.

“Petco is taking a commendable step for rabbits by reaffirming its adoption-only stance. We celebrated the company’s earlier decision to embrace a humane business model that prioritizes adoptable cats and dogs over puppies and kittens sourced from large-scale breeding operations,” stated Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

“By including rabbits in this policy, Petco sets a strong example of dedication to animal welfare and encourages other retailers to follow suit. There is simply no justification for puppy, kitten, or rabbit mills when countless adoptable companions are already waiting for homes,” Block added.

HSUS has been at the forefront of the initiative to eliminate puppy sales in pet stores, resulting in eight states and over 475 localities now prohibiting such sales, with many extending this ban to include kittens and rabbits.

“I am immensely pleased by the recommitment to an adoption-only policy for rabbits and commend Petco leaders for heeding the advice of Petco Love and our animal welfare community, staying aligned with Petco’s mission to enhance the lives of pets and their families,” remarked Susanne Kogut, President of Petco Love.

Petco’s revised policy will significantly support shelters and animal welfare organizations across the country, which often struggle to care for more rabbits than their communities can adopt. By showcasing shelter rabbits in their stores, this initiative boosts their visibility and encourages families to consider adoption. This partnership not only aids the rabbits but also fortifies the relationship between local shelters and the community, leading to increased adoption rates and happier homes for these animals.

It is essential for all pet stores to adopt an adoption-only policy for all animals, as selling pets perpetuates unethical breeding practices. This contributes not only to the suffering of animals but also exacerbates overcrowding in shelters, where countless pets await loving homes.

By prioritizing adoption, pet stores can help alleviate the number of animals in shelters, promote responsible pet ownership, and bolster animal welfare initiatives, ultimately fostering a more compassionate community for all pets.
