Within the halls of the SPCA, a multitude of stories unfold each day, and our ‘rescued to rehomed’ series unveils glimpses of the journeys undertaken by those under our care. Take, for instance, Griffin, a little soul discovered on the roadside along with his siblings.
The rescue mission unfolded when these abandoned pups, left to fend for themselves, found their way to the SPCA Dunedin Centre. Their initial state, while relatively promising, hinted at the harsh reality they narrowly escaped. Promptly, our dedicated team sprang into action, providing sustenance, warmth, and safety to the furry troupe.
As medical assessments ensued, a concern emerged – two of the litter displayed signs of limping, prompting a closer look at their health and well-being. The journey from abandonment to the embrace of care had begun, and Griffin’s tale was set to unfold, echoing the countless stories of resilience etched within the walls of the SPCA.
Amidst the duo, one pup found swift relief, showcasing a remarkable recovery. However, Griffin, the other half of the pair, faced a tougher journey. Gemma, our Canine Team Lead, observed Griffin’s struggle, noting a significant injury that warranted closer attention.
Gemma shared, “The other pup that was limping bounced back quickly. But this little guy was obviously a lot sadder and sore, so he went in for X-rays.” A poignant image captured Griffin’s plight – favoring his injured leg, unwilling to bear any weight, a testament to his clear discomfort. In his expressive gaze, Griffin seemed to implore our team for help, and the unspoken plea tugged at our hearts.
While the details of Griffin’s injury remained a mystery, the determination to alleviate his suffering became a shared mission. The journey to mend Griffin’s wounds and restore his joy had commenced, driven by the unwavering commitment of our team at the Dunedin Centre.
Griffin’s path to recovery involved a stint in a cast, not the most enjoyable experience for a young pup. Yet, the loving care from our Dunedin team made it a breeze, especially when dealing with such an endearing little fellow.
“Griffin was lucky, being so young worked in his favor, and he healed quite quickly. He only had to wear the cast for about five weeks,” shared Gemma. Sporting his slightly oversized cast, Griffin embarked on the road to recovery alongside his siblings, leaving behind the challenges of the past.
Under the dedicated care of our Dunedin Centre team, Griffin and his littermates received essential treatments, abundant nourishment, and an abundance of love and cuddles. As they gradually gained strength, their personalities emerged, revealing the resilience beneath their shells.
Griffin’s cast-changing routine every two weeks, a process he relished, became a focal point of attention and care. Gemma explained, “He loved it, as he got all the attention and special treatment. He was on restricted exercise, and keeping his cast clean and dry was always a bit of a mission—a challenge with a playful puppy!”
With time, the pups transformed into resilient, playful companions ready for adoption. Griffin, a staff favorite known for his cuddliness, soon found his forever home after seven weeks in our care.
In his new home, Griffin, now a cherished member of Neil’s family, found a companion in Nalu, another SPCA alum. Neil shared, “Griff is great company for her. They get on well and have a varied life. Plenty of walks and boat rides… Griff has just come and sat beside me on the couch now. He has a very loving nature.”
Griffin’s happily-ever-after is a heartening chapter in our ‘rescued to rehomed’ stories, bringing joy to both him and his adoptive family.
