Kawi, a clever orangutan at the Prague Zoo, recently amazed visitors and experts alike by inventing a tool to retrieve a floating wicker basket from a pond.

Lucie Štěpničková, who was visiting the zoo, captured the scene in photos as Kawi devised his plan.

First, Kawi grabbed a long piece of cloth and wet it by throwing it into the water to make it heavier. He then used the soaked cloth, swinging it skillfully, to pull the basket to shore. After successfully retrieving his prize, Kawi took the rag up into his enclosure’s climbing structure, draped it over a branch, and sat beneath it, catching water droplets in his mouth.

Lucie described the display as “incredible,” noting how it left her and other spectators in awe. “He is incredibly smart and resourceful,” she said, capturing a fascinating glimpse of the orangutan’s playful intelligence.
