He just couldn’t say goodbye β€οΈ
The staff of Southwest Airlines quickly bonded with the cats and dogs aboard their flight, but it was the pilot, Captain Matt Prebish, who felt an immediate connection with a spirited little kitten named Avery.
βI was captivated by her enthusiasm for the world and her vibrant energy,β Prebish shared in a press release from Southwest Airlines. During the flight, he found it increasingly difficult to consider parting ways with Avery. Although he hadnβt planned on adopting a rescue animal, his wife was well aware of his soft spot.
“My wife told me she had a feeling that once I took this trip, I would likely come home with a new furry friend,” Prebish recounted. Upon landing, a storm at the airport delayed everyone for about 20 minutes before they could deplane, providing just the right window for Prebish to call his wife and gauge her feelings about welcoming a new family member.
She gave him the thumbs-up, prompting Prebish and the shelter staff to finalize the adoption right there on the plane.
“It certainly wasnβt in the plan,” said shelter representative Horowitz. βThere was a bit of a flurry to get the adoption paperwork completed.β Afterward, Prebish flew back to Denver with Avery nestled comfortably beside him, feeling a sense of relief as they settled into their new life together.
Not only did Prebish gain a new feline companion, but he also contributed to the rescue efforts for animals affected by the hurricane. By facilitating the transfer of animals from shelters in Florida to those in Milwaukee, the Florida shelters were able to make room for local animals that had been displaced or injured by the storm.
βIβm grateful and proud that we could play a part in making a difference,β Prebish expressed. βI hope these animals find their forever homes and bring joy to many people.β
