β€œTwo sweet souls struggled to survive …”

Recently, a Good Samaritan passing through Gary, Indiana, heard an unusual barking sound coming from an old, abandoned laundromat. Concerned for the source, they quickly alerted local authorities.

Animal control officer Mari Randolph, alongside Kelly Carey and Jay Weinberg from Silverstray Social, arrived to investigate. As they cautiously navigated the crumbling building, the rescuers were drawn to the noise coming from a pit in the floor. Peering into the darkness, they discovered two young pit bulls trapped below, desperate for help.

β€œTwo sweet souls fighting to survive,” Silverstray Social shared in a video recounting the rescue.

Using a ladder, tarp, and ropes, the team carefully hoisted the scared but trusting dogs out of the hole. It was a tense operation, but a wave of relief came as both pups were lifted to safety.

“It felt like a huge weight had been lifted,” Carey said. “We could finally breathe knowing they were safe and ready for a fresh start.”

The pups, severely underweight and visibly anxious, responded with gentle kindness, seeking comfort but understandably wary of the strangers who had saved them.

The dogs were taken to a local shelter, where they were given food and water, gradually regaining their strength. Now, they are settling into foster care, rebuilding their health and preparing to find permanent homes.

On a recent visit, Carey was delighted to see the transformation in their demeanor. β€œDespite everything, their spirits are high,” she said. β€œThey’re playful, outgoing, and full of life.”

With a bit of luck, these resilient pups will soon find their forever families.
