Wild gorillas eat the same tree bark used by traditional healers, which can inhibit the growth of E. coli in petri dishes, according to a new study.

In May, a concerned neighbor reached out to the Pennsylvania SPCA with distressing news: 17 dogs were being kept in appalling conditions nearby. Responding swiftly, animal law enforcement officers rushed to investigate and confirmed the dire situation.

“The dogs, who should have had lush, white coats, were almost entirely bald, suffering from crusted sores and open wounds,” the Pennsylvania SPCA shared in a post at the time.

Among these suffering animals was a dog named Coda.

Safe in the shelter, Coda quickly settled into his new surroundings. His lively personality made him an instant favorite among staff.

β€œCoda was definitely one of the more outgoing dogs,” a Pennsylvania SPCA representative shared. β€œHe adored being around people and seemed to understand we were there to help.”

Staff were amazed by Coda’s unwavering friendliness, despite his past hardships.

β€œAfter all he had endured, his forgiving and resilient nature truly stood out,” the representative added. Veterinarians crafted a special feeding plan for Coda, and he received regular medicated baths. Slowly, his beautiful white fur began to grow back, transforming him into the fluffy, snow-colored pup he was always meant to be.

Once he was medically cleared, Coda moved into a foster home and began his search for his forever family. It didn’t take long before he found them, along with a new nameβ€”Bo.

β€œHe’s the best dog ever!” Bo’s new mom told the Pennsylvania SPCA. β€œI’ve never met a dog more affectionateβ€”he just craves love and wants to befriend everyone he meets, human or dog.”

Today, Bo lives a carefree life, exactly what his rescuers had always hoped for him. β€œGiving dogs like [Bo] a second chance at happiness is why we do this,” the representative said. β€œAs he left with his new family, you’d never guess he had once suffered so much. He was simply joyful.”
