Last Wednesday, residents near Campbellville, Northern California, were forced to evacuate due to the state’s largest wildfire, the Park Fire, which has consumed over 370 thousand acres.
Among those evacuating was an individual who had to flee in a truck with their pets, only to have the vehicle break down. The Butte County Sheriff reported, โUnfortunately, the resident had to leave the truck behind, which included two adult Rottweilers and their puppies.โ The owner was able to provide responders with the truckโs location, but the area was initially inaccessible due to the ongoing blaze.
Despite the dire circumstances, all hope was not lost for the stranded dogs.
Upon learning of the dogs’ plight, Trevor Skraggs from the Butte County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue took immediate action to rescue them.
He traveled by helicopter into the fire zone and was dropped off at a secure location some distance from where the dogs had been last seen. โAfter arriving, Trevor ran 1.5 miles to the site and found the puppies and their mother alive, though exhausted and extremely thirsty,โ the sheriffโs office reported.
Tragically, the puppies’ father had not survived the ordeal, but Trevor Skraggs ensured that the rest of the family would not face the same fate.
He provided them with food and water, then guided the weary family back to the waiting helicopter. Thanks to Skraggs’ heroic efforts, the remaining members of the family were safely evacuated, their lives saved from the devastating wildfire.
Upon landing back outside the fire zone, Skraggs posed for photos with the dogs heโd rescued.
Amid so much tragedy, the dogsโ safe arrival proved to be a glimmer of hope.
After their rescue, the dogs were transferred to the North Valley Animal Disaster Group, a nonprofit dedicated to safeguarding animals displaced by the fire.
Trevor Skraggs’ lifesaving actions have garnered widespread praise from both the public and his colleagues. โItโs been a horrific few days for our community,โ the Butte County Sheriff remarked. โWe are grateful to be able to share this amazing story.โ
