He needed help 💔
Kayaking offers a wonderful way to immerse oneself in nature, typically allowing kayakers to observe wildlife from afar. However, Dave’s recent kayaking adventure took an unexpected turn when he returned to his truck and discovered a surprising guest perched at the back window.
“He was like, ‘Oh my God, there’s a hawk in here,’” recounted Tracie Young, a rehabilitator with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center.
Dave opened the tailgate and the truck’s top, hoping the young red-tailed hawk would take the hint and fly off. But the hawk remained unmoved. Realizing he needed professional help, Dave reached out to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. Fortunately, one of their capture transport volunteers was already nearby and ready to assist.
Using a towel, the skilled animal handler carefully lifted the hawk from its perch in the back of the truck. She then transported him to the wildlife center for a thorough assessment and care.
Rescuers found that the hawk was dehydrated and underweight. They provided him with a nutritious diet and a temporary home in a flight pen alongside other rehabilitated birds.
With time, this hawk will regain his strength and be ready to return to the wild where he belongs.
“He’s doing great,” Young said. “He’s eating well now. He just needed that extra care and support. He’ll be ready for release soon.”
