Last month, a couple in New York purchased a new home and began an excavation project in their backyard. During one of their visits to inspect the progress, the husband noticed something peculiar on a pile of overturned dirt—a large snapping turtle. Surprised to see such a creature out in the open, especially in their suburban backyard, the couple grew concerned and decided to seek help.

They promptly contacted Karenlynn Stracher, a local wildlife rescuer known for her expertise in handling such situations. Understanding the urgency, Stracher arrived at the scene and quickly assessed the situation. It became evident that the snapping turtle was not just any turtle; she was a mother protecting her nest of 59 eggs buried beneath the soil.

Snapping turtles, known for their brief period of egg-guarding before returning to nearby water bodies, prompted Stracher to take action swiftly. With utmost care and expertise, she delicately removed all 59 eggs from the nest and placed them into a specially prepared carrier. Ensuring the eggs’ safety was paramount, Stracher transported them to a secure location where they could hatch without disturbance.

“The eggs are now housed in a shoebox-sized plastic bin filled with moist soil,” Stracher explained. “They are secure and are expected to hatch in approximately 60 days.”

This meticulous rescue operation not only ensured the well-being of the snapping turtle’s offspring but also highlighted the importance of conservation efforts in urban and suburban environments. Thanks to the timely intervention and dedicated efforts of Stracher and the concerned homeowners, these turtle eggs have a better chance of hatching and thriving in their natural habitat.
