The animal welfare organization reports a significant “influx” of cats entering its centers, marking a 58% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, there has been a notable surge in low-welfare kitten breeding, mirroring the concerning trends observed in low-welfare puppy farming practices.

The Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is issuing an urgent plea to households across the nation, appealing for compassionate individuals to open their homes to adopt cats, as the organization’s centers approach full capacity.

Highlighting a notable “influx” of feline arrivals, a stark 58% surge compared to the previous year, the animal welfare charity is sounding the alarm for assistance.

Anna O’Donnell, lead for rehoming and fostering, passionately advocates, “With a growing number of cats seeking refuge in our care, we encourage those considering a feline addition to their family to contemplate rescuing an animal. Our selection includes diverse breeds, temperaments, and ages, ensuring we have the ideal cat for most households.”

In a departure from conventional kitten acquisition, potential buyers are being urged to consider the charm and companionship of young adult cats. Ms. O’Donnell elaborated, “Young adults are just as spirited and delightful as kittens but often come with the advantage of being a bit more manageable in various aspects of care.”

The Scottish SPCA has noted a concerning uptick in low-welfare kitten breeding, echoing the challenges witnessed in low-welfare puppy farming.

Ms. O’Donnell cautioned, “Much like puppies, kittens raised in suboptimal conditions are prone to a range of health and behavioral issues. We implore individuals not to support such practices and instead turn to us for a more ethical choice.”

Expressing the immense gratitude of rescued animals for a chance at a loving home, she remarked, “Those who have experienced the joy of rescuing an animal can attest to the profound gratitude these cats exhibit. Our hope is to see them all embraced by new families, bringing happiness and contentment into their lives as swiftly as possible.”
