Juvenile Tortoises Embark on Isabela Island Odyssey!

In a remarkable feat, the Galapagos Conservancy orchestrated the aerial relocation of 136 juvenile Galápagos tortoises, aged 5 to 9 years, to Isabela Island—their exclusive natural habitat on Earth. Born and nurtured at the Breeding and Rearing Center on the island, these tortoises received dedicated care from vigilant park rangers.

The innovative use of helicopters, funded by generous public donations, played a pivotal role, sparing the tortoises from the arduous alternative of sea transport and a challenging journey across miles of lava fields.

After meticulous preparations, including quarantine, health assessments, and microchip identification, the tortoises embarked on a unique journey to the picturesque south of Isabela Island, all under stringent safety protocols.

This pioneering initiative now allows these remarkable creatures to thrive in their natural state, experiencing a lifespan averaging over 100 years.

Helicopters Vital in Transporting Tortoises to Isabela’s Volcanic Landscape!

The Galápagos initiatives play a pivotal role in restoring the ecological equilibrium of the Ecuadorian island chain in South America. Tortoises, being primary herbivores, actively contribute to landscape shaping and seed dispersal, critical elements for ecosystem stability.

The successful relocation of 136 juvenile turtles via helicopter represents “a crucial milestone in our conservation mission in Galápagos,” according to Dr. Jorge Carrión, the Director of Conservation at the Galapagos Conservancy.
