Now she needs a home.
When animal officers in Syracuse, New York, discovered Amarillo alone inside an apartment last month, it was clear she had been left behind.
Arrangements were made to transfer her to Friends Forever Animal Rescue, where she could finally receive proper care.
Before Amarillo arrived, rescuers were sent photographs of her.
The pictures immediately stopped them in their tracks.
Her coat was bright yellow.
“We were shocked and stunned,” Friends Forever Animal Rescue wrote in a Facebook post. “Why was she yellow? What is that?”
No one knew exactly what had caused the unusual color.
The staining was far too intense to be ordinary dirt or dander, so rescuers began considering other possibilities. Maybe it was dye, highlighter or even some kind of food seasoning.
Whatever it was, they knew Amarillo needed a thorough cleaning.
Her yellow coat wasn’t the only sign of neglect.
She was severely dehydrated, her nails had grown far too long and her overall condition suggested she hadn’t been receiving the care she needed.
But her personality told a very different story.
Despite everything, Amarillo was friendly and eager for affection.
“She was incredibly happy and affectionate,” rescue founder Casey Newton-McLaren said. “She was eager to climb into the arms of anyone willing to give her attention and love.”
Then came the baths.
One wasn’t enough.
Neither were five.
It took seven washes before rescuers began noticing a meaningful difference in her coat.
By bath number 16, nearly all of the yellow staining had finally disappeared.
As the strange color faded, Amarillo’s health improved too.
She began gaining weight, her coat became healthier and shinier, and she started looking like a completely different dog.
“Today, Amarillo looks amazing,” Newton-McLaren said. “She has gained weight, her coat is healthy and shiny, and although you can still see a small amount of yellow peeking through in places, it no longer defines what you see when you look at her.”
Now Amarillo is ready for the next part of her story.
Her rescuers say she gets along well with children, dogs and cats, and would be happiest with a family that wants to include her in daily activities.
“She does well with children, dogs, cats and just about everything in between,” Newton-McLaren said. “She is an active little girl and would love a family that includes her in their activities.”
For the rescue team, finding Amarillo a home isn’t simply about completing another adoption.
They want to make sure the family who chooses her understands that this time, the commitment needs to last.
“More than anything, Amarillo deserves commitment,” Newton-McLaren said. “She deserves a family that sees the beauty in her, cherishes her, and understands that bringing her home means promising that this time, nobody is going to leave her behind.”
Amarillo may have arrived at the rescue covered in a mysterious yellow stain.
But after everything she has overcome, that color is no longer what stands out most.
What people see now is an affectionate, resilient dog waiting for someone to finally give her the permanent home she deserves.
