Even the lab techs were shocked by how rare this pup is.
When Dante was found standing in the middle of a Kentucky road last October, countless drivers passed him without stopping.
Eventually, someone did.
The abandoned dog was rescued and later adopted by Kami Neihoff, who quickly realized there was something unusually special about her new companion.
What she did not know was just how genetically unique Dante would turn out to be.
His Past Was a Complete Mystery
Because Dante had been found as a stray, Neihoff knew almost nothing about his background.
As a dog groomer, she was particularly curious about his unusual coat, which looked different from others she had encountered.
She also wanted to learn about any genetic health risks he might carry.
So she decided to order a canine DNA test, expecting to finally discover which breeds made up Dante’s ancestry.
Instead, she received a failed result.
One Failed DNA Test Became Three
Neihoff initially used a test from Embark.
When the first sample failed, the company offered her another opportunity to try.
That one failed too.
A third attempt produced the same result.
Even the testing company seemed unsure why Dante’s DNA could not be successfully analyzed, and Neihoff eventually received a refund.
But rather than satisfying her curiosity, the repeated failures made her even more determined to find an explanation.
A Second Company Couldn’t Solve the Mystery Either
Neihoff decided to try again using Wisdom, another canine DNA testing service.
Two more cheek-swab tests failed.
At that point, the company suggested bypassing the usual saliva sample and using blood instead.
Neihoff brought Dante to a veterinarian, where blood was collected and sent to the laboratory.
Surely, she thought, this method would finally produce an answer.
It didn’t.
The blood test failed too.
Six Failed Tests Finally Led to an Explanation
After the blood sample produced yet another unsuccessful result, Neihoff contacted Wisdom directly.
She could not understand how so many different samples could all fail.
This time, the laboratory manager examined Dante’s raw genetic data more closely.
What she discovered finally explained everything.
Dante was a chimera.
Dante Has Two Different Sets of DNA
Chimerism can occur when two embryos fuse together very early in development.
Instead of developing as two separate individuals, they become one animal carrying two genetically distinct sets of cells.
That meant Dante did not have the straightforward DNA profile the testing equipment expected to find.
His samples effectively contained two genetic signatures at once.
The testing systems could not successfully separate those profiles to provide the usual breed breakdown, explaining why every attempt had failed.
The Answer Was Nothing Like His Owner Expected
Neihoff had started the process hoping to find out whether Dante might be a mix of familiar dog breeds.
After six unsuccessful tests, she instead learned something considerably more unusual about him.
The discovery also means she may never receive the simple breed percentages she originally wanted.
But the unanswered question about Dante’s ancestry became far less important once she understood why his genetics were so difficult to analyze.
His Rare Genetics May Carry a Health Consideration
So far, Dante has been healthy.
However, Neihoff said his chimerism may place him at a slightly increased risk for autoimmune problems later in life.
Because his body contains two sets of DNA, there is a possibility that his immune system could eventually identify cells carrying one genetic profile as foreign.
For now, though, there have been no signs of such complications.
From Roadside Rescue to One-of-a-Kind Dog
Dante’s life could have turned out very differently after he was left waiting in the road.
Instead, he found a family willing to stop, rescue him and eventually become curious enough about his mysterious past to uncover an extraordinary genetic trait.
Neihoff still may not know exactly what breeds make up her dog.
But after six failed DNA tests and one surprising explanation, she knows something far more certain.
Dante truly is one of a kind.
